Be A Support Beam, Not A Splinter
Be A Support Beam, Not A Splinter | August 27th
When it comes to construction, support beams are critical. These weight-bearing beams are the horizontal rafters that connect to the vertical posts and columns in the home. Commercial buildings typically call for steel beams, but the purpose is still the same. Support beams primarily sustain the weight of the building's floors, ceilings, and roofs. Thus, support beams are necessary and valuable. They are the polar opposite of splinters in terms of value! Even the word's definition hurts to speak or read (A splinter is a small, tiny, sharp piece of wood, glass, or similar material.) Getting a splinter is no fun, and inflammation and infection are possible if the tiny fragment goes deep into your skin.
Therefore, when it comes to your contribution to others, you want to be a support beam, not a splinter! Galatians 6:2 tells us to be a support beam when it says, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Also, First Thessalonians 5:11 states, "Therefore encourage one another and build up one another."
In addition, Jesus taught that unjust criticism or judging is counterproductive and destructive when it comes to being supportive of others. Matthew 7:1-5 says, "Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye."
To the best of our ability, we should seek to be helpful (support beam) instead of hurtful (splinter). Knowing this, pray about being a support beam to the people in your life. Also, confess any of those "splinter-type" attitudes or actions.
By God's grace, you will serve as His support beam to others.
