Kindness Is Good For Your Health

Kindness Is Good For Your Health | February 21, 2024

When planning the Think Healthy, Live Healthy Devotional book we released last month, kindness was one of the primary topics I wanted to highlight concerning the mind. Therefore, I dedicated an entire chapter called the Neuroscience of Kindness. See, there is an unmistakable connection to kindness and our overall mental and emotional well-being.

The Mayo Clinic Health System states, "Kindness has been shown to increase self-esteem, empathy and compassion, and improve mood."

Proverbs 21:21, "Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor."

To pursue righteousness and kindness means to seek to do what is right by God and others. Looking at these two focal areas in their respective columns, first, pursuing righteousness means recognizing that you cannot please God in your sinful state. Thus, you turn from trying to justify yourself by religious merits and instead lean on God's mercy.
‌Secondly, to pursue kindness means you seek to be intentional by being good to people with your attitude and actions. Practically speaking, you do this by helping others, talking with encouragement, and maintaining a good mood.

These pursuits may sometimes be inconvenient, but you can persevere!
‌As a result, Scripture promises that you will find three indispensable blessings:

1. Life: God will fill you with a deep sense of confidence and fulfillment. Doing what is right and treating people right will undoubtedly put you in a good head space, eventually impacting your overall health.

2. Righteousness: God views your pursuit of righteousness and kindness as obedience to His commands, ultimately resulting in more righteousness in your life (Romans 4:22).

3. Honor: When you do what is right and treat people right, the principle of sowing and reaping comes into play. "You reap what you sow." As you sow the pursuit of righteousness and kindness, the blessing of God's favor will be upon your life.

Life, righteousness, and honor will lead to more excellent health— emotionally, relationally, physically, and spiritually.
