God's Ears And Our Tears
God's Ears And Our Tears | July 12, 2024
Have you ever considered the science of crying? There is a physiological understanding of how and why the body produces tears to lubricate the eyes, but the purpose of tears goes beyond ophthalmological maintenance. Scientists have realized that crying is also an emotional response to experiences. Emotional tears are initiated by the limbic system, the part of the brain responsible for regulating emotions. It signals the brain's messaging system, prompting the lacrimal glands to produce tears. According to the Tennesse Valley Recovery organization, "A vulnerable state of mind and prolonged desperation can induce a cry for help from a victim of extreme emotional distress."
Whether those circumstances are good, bad, or ugly, tears may flow and follow. You can shed tears of joy over the birth of a new baby in the family or weep over the passing of someone you love. You can have tears over a moving scene in a movie or excitement over your team winning the big game. You can have tears of fear or tears of courage. Either way, a good cry is healthy, and I have often thought of it as God's way of letting us release and find relief or mark a significant moment in our lives.
In addition to the biological reasons for crying, there is also a spiritual purpose to consider. See, when troublesome seasons occur, we are more positioned and sometimes humbled to cry out to God for help. For example, in the Old Testament, we see David passionately seeking God's help. Psalm 34:6 says, "This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles."
David was "this poor man" because of his immediate circumstances involving conflict at home and abroad. Nevertheless, he sought the Lord with his head up, wet eyes, and bent knees. The Lord heard his plea for peace, and David was delivered.
Likewise, you can seek God and cry out for help because His ears are very much in tune with our tears. Psalm 56:8 states, "You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”
