Receiving The Father's Blessing
Receiving The Father's Blessing | June 16th
In the Old Testament, the father's duty was to speak blessing over his children. See, the blessing had significant implications regarding the children's family position and the promised inheritance. The blessing also provided affirmation and a deep sense of purpose. For example, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau (Genesis 27), Jacob blessed his 12 sons (Genesis 49:1-28), and David blessed his son Solomon (1 Kings 2:1-4). The model for speaking the blessing over your children comes from our heavenly Father. He blessed Noah (Genesis 9:1) and declared a far-reaching blessing on Abraham (Genesis 12:2) and David (2 Samuel 7).
While the characters in the Old Testament were not perfect, their faith and obedience are worth emulating. Their lives serve as a testament to the power of God's blessing, providing tremendous encouragement in two ways:
First, we should know our heavenly Father's blessing on our lives. He has spoken the Words of Life over us and extended specific promises that, if applied, can provide a peace that surpasses many of the woes in this life and inspire indomitable faith. Ephesians 3:20 states, "Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think." And 1 Peter 2:9 says, "For you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light."
Secondly, as parents or family members, we are responsible for speaking blessing over the children. We must diligently pray over our kids and speak blessings in their presence over their lives. There is way too much confusion and pride in the world for us not to be proactive in speaking blessing. That is why speaking negatively and putting unfavorable labels on children can be so damaging. Proverbs 18:21 says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue."
With this in mind, let us trust God's spoken blessing and let us actively speak blessing over our children. Let us declare the goodness of God in their lives and remind them of their value and place just as our heavenly Father does for us.
James 1:17, "Every good gift, every perfect gift, comes from above. These gifts come down from the Father, the creator of the heavenly lights, in whose character there is no change at all."
