Think Before You Talk
Think Before You Talk | November 15, 2023
Have you ever said something and wished you could take it back moments later? The words didn't come out right, or the tone was harsh. Maybe you spoke too soon, without all the facts. When this happens, you question yourself internally: "If only I would've waited!" "I should've remained quiet!" "Why didn't I say it differently!" "I wish I could just go back in time!" Hindsight is always 20/20. However, your reaction should not end with regret.
First, look to apologize immediately by taking ownership of your mistake. That means you don't blame those verbal blunders on someone else or your circumstances.
Secondly, you need to adopt a new communication method. For example, saying sorry but repeating the verbal attack adds insult to injury. Therefore, take notice of Proverbs 29:20, which says, "There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking."
According to this verse, a productive and ultimately successful communication strategy is to think before you talk! Consider this: How many verbal fires can you avoid by thinking about what you will say? How many feelings can be spared from your insensitivity or ignorance? Thinking before you talk will limit relational damage, people drama, and discouragement.
Knowing this, filter your responses to those sensitive conversations by asking yourself the following questions before speaking to others: Do I have all the facts? Do I have an ulterior motive? Is the timing right? Have I prayed yet about what I am going to say? In addition, for those everyday talks, it is wise to live by the principle that says I want to honor God and help others with my words.
Whether it's conflict resolution, confrontation, casual conversation, or counsel being offered, we need to ask God to guide and guard our gums! A humble and helpful prayer to use daily is Psalm 141:3, "Lord, set up a guard for my mouth; keep watch at the door of my lips."
May God give us the strength and discipline to think about what He would have us say before we talk!
