Seeking God's Blessing
Seeking God's Blessing | October 14, 2023
There's an old Irish blessing that says,
"May there always be work for your hands to do,
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine warm on your windowpane,
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you,
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you."
Whether these words were inspired by a season of adversity or a time of affluence, it is important to remember that we have this intrinsic desire to seek God for blessing because our heavenly Father chooses to bless His people and meet their needs. Philippians 4:19 declares, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
While God stands ready to supply for what we lack, we must also be accountable. See, our Heavenly Father watches how we act. Thus, if our faith is insincere or our actions duplicitous, we shouldn't expect our prayers for blessing to be answered, whether they rhyme like the Irish blessing or not! Psalm 66:18 says, "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened." Whenever we hold onto a sinful pursuit, God will not "give ear" to our prayer requests. Like a loving parent, He desires us to be on the right path. Those prayers for blessing will go unanswered until we come to a place of repentance and obedience. On the contrary, when we honor God and do life His way, we can pray and trust God for "greater things."
Therefore, the pathway to blessing is clear: seek God for blessing with a sincere and clean heart and then leave the results to Him.
Psalm 20:4, "May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans!"
