Waiting On God For Direction

Waiting On God For Direction | October 4, 2023

Before the Global Positioning System (GPS) innovation, asking for directions was sometimes challenging. Whether it was finding someone familiar with your destination or dealing with the humiliation of actually being lost, seeking help was an adventure. Now, we can speak to our phones, watches, or car GPS to get the quickest route—with no tolls!

Wouldn't it be great if our faith worked like that? Imagine if God gave turn-by-turn directions through life's twists and turns. Think about how great it would be to have the Lord warn you about upcoming struggles or strife so that you can avoid the stress from it all. While heaven isn't providing you with a detailed map of your life's journey, God does speak to His people about where they are to go in the Holy Scriptures. Isaiah 30:21 says, "Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you, a voice will say, 'This is the way you should go,' whether to the right or to the left."
God has always been in the business of guiding His people. Just as He chaperoned the people of Judah in Isaiah's day (Isaiah 30:21), He provides direction and covering today to those seeking Him. The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit have never taken a break from guiding us. So much of the teaching ministry of Jesus was about pointing people in the direction of the cross (redemption.) The message and mission of Christ have stayed the same. Hebrews 13:8 declares, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever."

That divine continuity is the Gospel message of Jesus' atoning death on the cross and His victorious triumph over death. Considering God's heart for leading His people on the right path, perhaps GPS might stand for "God's Positioning Spirit." The way God's Positioning Spirit works is by you yielding to God for counsel. Yielding is through prayer, fasting, Scripture reading, and giving. As you remain committed to filling your heart with God, you can expect a greater awareness of the Spirit's leading. The more time you spend with God, the better His positioning Spirit will work in your life. Psalm 16:11 says, "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
Therefore, wait for God to speak through His Word. Then, seek Him in prayer and combine short-term fasting. You will never regret having the patience for God's timing and purposes.
