Keep Your Promises With God
Keep Your Promises With God | Monday, August 7, 2023
One of the more encouraging truths taught in the Bible is that God is a promise keeper. Psalm 145:13b says, "The LORD always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does." Based on this verse and personal experience, we can rest in knowing God keeps His promises. However, can the same be said of us? Do we keep the promises we make to God? Promise-keeping is important to God and should also be on our radar. See, if we make promises to God but do not keep them, we risk being irreverent. The Scripture reveals that God is dishonored and grieved when we come into His presence and lack the integrity to keep our promises.
Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 says, "As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God. 2 Don't make rash promises, and don't be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few. 3 Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool. 4 When you make a promise to God, don't delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him. 5 It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it. 6 Don't let your mouth make you sin. And don't defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved. 7 Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead."
Our mouths write checks that our hearts do not want to cash. Typically we do not follow our prayer promises to God because our circumstances have changed for the better. For example, someone on their deathbed may promise God that he will turn his life around if he is healed, but that promise doesn't get fulfilled because he loves himself more than God. Another example could be someone praying for a job or a spouse. The promise may include being committed to the church. So the blessing comes, but the promise maker can't find time for church soon after.
Keeping our promises matters to God and should also mean something to us.
